The Best of (Week 12ish)

We've had some big accomplishments this week...

1. Early bedtime.  We're now able to get Maddie to sleep by 6-7 pm every night.  We actually have time to eat dinner and watch a full uninterrupted movie before parent bedtime!

2.  Full Night Sleep.  Maddie's Circadian rhythms / biological clock seem to be in sync and we're  consistently getting between 6-12 hours of sleep from her before she wakes for a feeding. After feeding she goes right back down for additional sleep.

3. Morning Nap.  She's consistently sleeping for 2 hours early in the morning (8-10 am)

In all, she's getting 12-14 hours of sleep each night/early morning.  Though, she's developed a bad habit of not being able to nap during the day (and being grouchy because of it).  We're hoping that is just temporary.

4. She's able to support herself and use the (upright) Bumpo Chairs without assistance.  The bouncer (i.e. recliner) chair that was our most essential "baby thing" has now been relegated to the second team

5. She has started liking the electronic swing!  Hell yes!  Now we can rock her to sleep by sitting on the couch and watching tv.  No more kicking the bouncer every 5 seconds for half an hour.

6. We use the stroller without the car seat attached - Now Maddie can sit upright and watch the cold, snowy, chicago winterland go by as we walk her through the unshoveled sidewalks

7. We left Maddie with strangers for the first time.   Our gym has a childcare area that allows you to drop your kids of for up to 2 hours as you work out.  The cost was minimal... and Maddie got a face rash from something or someone... but it was great to just dump our problems on someone else as we leisurely watched "Love it or List It" from the treadmill

Imitating Raspberries!

We have been blowing raspberries at Maddie the past few days.  She has just started to imitate the raspberries and it is the cutest thing!  It usually takes her a few attempts after we start.  They sound either like "buuuu" or "pfffft."   Earlier today she actually started the raspberries first!

We have been able to capture a few moments on video.  You might need to turn up the volume to hear her.

(The shadow on her face is from the little birds hanging from her bouncy chair)

Visiting Vickie's Office

I head back to work in a few weeks (February 9th) and wanted to bring Maddie into the office to show her off before I head back to work.

Here is a picture of us in my cubicle.

10th & 11th Weeks

Some pictures from Maddie's 10th & 11th weeks.

On our way to meet friends for dinner and board games.

We have been blessed with unseasonably warm weather this winter!  I strapped Maddie on my chest and we went out for a walk.  She was asleep when I first headed out, then woke up mid-walk.  She would not go back to sleep and wanted to turn her head and see the sights.

Bath time!!  Look at those adorable rolls!!

I L L  -  I N I !

Maddie has her own chair!  A friend of mine sent Maddie this lovely personalized chair for her room!

Enjoying Tummy Time

Maddie has started to enjoy tummy time a bit more!  We prop her on the Boppy pillow and she seems to enjoy it, she smiles and laughs at the beginning until she gets fussy.

Talking up a Storm

When Maddie's in a good mood, she just loves to talk.  This is usually after eating, getting a clean diaper, or early morning drowsy time.

Maddie has recently discovered her hand.  It is now in her mouth about 50% of the time.

Maddie really enjoys a new activity we picked up while in Tulsa - back to situp to standup.  We've been doing both situps and stands for about a week, but not as one continuous motion.  Thanks family for the idea!  She should be walking a a couple of days.

1st Trip - Tulsa

Maddie's first trip out of town didn't go as smoothly as we had hoped.  We hauled all of our baby gear and luggage to the El stop and took the train to the airport.  On the way there it started to snow with zero visibility.   Surely our flight wouldn't be delayed.

After 4 delays they announced on the intercom that our flight was cancelled (as well as other United flights to Tulsa).  It was a mad dash to the customer service counter at the other end of the terminal.  People were literally running through the airport, luggage in tow, multiple gate's worth of people, just to beat everyone else to the customer service line.  What a bunch of inconsiderate a-holes.  I was one of those a-holes.  I left luggage, wife, and child behind before the announcement was even done.  As I was running through the airport I even pulled out my cell phone to call united customer support.

The customer service line had about 50 people in it already.  About 400 lined up behind me.  Luckily, I was able to reach someone on the phone after 20 minutes.  They booked us on a flight on another airline (and terminal) that was leaving in 10 minutes.  I gambled that the American flight would also be delayed, grabbed V/M and luggage, and headed to the American terminal.  The American terminal was accessible via tram which was on the other end of the terminal (about a mile away and outside of the security gate).  We made it to the tram just in time to hear them announce that it was out of service and that shuttle buses would be able to take us to other terminals.  These buses were outside (snow storm).  We decided it would be easier to just walk - out to the CTA trains to the city and then head over the American Terminal.  At least we wouldn't have to go outside.

We finally arrived at the American terminal and tried to access our tickets via the e-ticketing machine.  However, there was an error in printing that required us to stand in another 50 person line.

30 minutes later we make it to the counter.  The agent says that a reservation was made in our name but tickets were not issued/confirmed.  To top it off, he also said that the flight already left and that he couldn't book us on another flight because the United Airlines agent hadn't released us from the previously cancelled flight.  They had us as "checked in" to the cancelled flight.  The american agent gave me a phone and I waited another 30 minutes to talk to the united rep.  They got things sorted out on the united side, figured out that the American flight hadn't left (Go figure), booked us on the American flight (which was delayed again and didn't even have a gate).  Another 30 minutes and we're through security and we're standing in the american terminal.  No gate has been assigned.  Flight is delayed again.  Well, shit.  I guess we'll just sit in the last known gate for the flight and wait it out.  An hour later and they announce the gate - another terminal - but at least we don't have to go through security again.  2 more delays and we're actually sitting on the plane.  Now it's time for Maddie to take a crap and be fussy.  Yea!  We only have to wait for a de-icing and the OK to go. An hour later, we're in the air!  Luckily, she falls asleep just before takeoff.   In all, we spent about 14 hours on planes, trains, and airport lines.

Here's some pictures of family in Tulsa

The trip back was just about perfect, however.  Here's a pic of Maddie after getting back to the house.  She was tired and cranky for the next 2 days.

9th Week

Here are some random pictures from Maddie's 9th week.

This week we ramped up the playtime activities.

We tried out Grandma's Xmas present - the Jumparoo.  She's a little short for it but with some help she can hold her head up and play for awhile.

We started introducing new smells to her (spices from the kitchen).   She didn't have much of a reaction to them other than the licorice ones (fennel seeds, etc) which she did not like.

We started doing situp with the help of a pillow.  She really likes those.

She has begun mimicking sounds as seen in the following video.
